Junior Hurling (Senior attached) County Final

Tallow 1-13 Mount Sion 1-13

Both seasoned and unseasoned observers of Tallow club hurling agreed that this was one of the better games of junior hurling that they had witnessed over the years. Both teams attempted to go for scores from distance and to link up with teammates and the decent crowd at Walsh Park got their money's worth. In the end both teams could have justifiable arguments for being the better team but overall a draw was probably a fair result.

We played with the wind in the first half and got off to a great start going four points to nil up after ten minutes, Luke Mc Carthy being particularly impressive in the forward line and his two points were aided by one each from William Murphy and JP Grey . Our fullback line of Bob Mc Carthy, Keith Hallahan and Eric Hickey were dominant and this set a platform for a steady supply of ball into the forward line. Mount Sion soon got going and halved the deficit in the next five minutes. Further points from William Murphy, JP Grey, Michael Curley and Robert O Sullivan stretched our lead again and though Mount Sion had a spell of domination in the last five minutes before halftime we ended the half on a bright note with a goal to leave the halftime score Tallow 1-9 Mount Sion 0-6.

While the mood at halftime was cautious yet positive we were unprepared for a secondhalf onslaught from Mount Sion. They dominated the third quarter and wasted no time in drawing level with a succession of points. The introduction of Kevin O Brien steadied the Tallow ship and we got our first score of the half through William Murphy. Mount Sion were in no mood to go away though and levelled again. However we were finally finding some rhythm in our play and points from a William Murphy free, a wonderful long range score from Billy Sheehan and a third from Stuart Barry gave us a three point lead entering the final five minutes. There was to be another twist to the tale though as Mount Sion worked a goal to draw level as the game entered its final few minutes. In a frantic finsh both teams won possession near the opposing goal but couldn't convert and the game ended with both teams having given everything and ready to fight another day.

Team B Power, E Hickey, B Mc Carthy, K Hallahan, K Fraser, B Sheehan, S Pratt, M Curley, W Murphy, B Mc Carthy, L Mc Carthy, R O Sullivan, K Henley, S Barry, JP Grey. Subs S G Mc Carthy for K Fraser, K O Brien for S Pratt.

Personally I can't see why extra time shouldn't have been played but the argument is that a final is a stand-alone fixture so we return to the city next weekend and at the time of writing Friday night at the new WIT complex in Carriganore is the most likely scenario. (I'll confirm this later in the notes and on the website) It will mean two trips to Waterford for our supporters but I suppose it's a good problem to have.

Best wishes to Kieran Fraser who went off injured and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Senior Hurling County Final

There's no doubting what the main event of this weekend is and we look forward to a great day for our club in what is our first senior county final in a generation. I'll leave it for others to preview the hurling action but there can be no disputing the gravity of the challenge facing us in the shape of a superb Ballygunner side. County finals are a regular occurrence for the men from the far eastern end of the county and they have shown that their production line is in good working order since the gradual retirement of their Munster-title winning team of 2001. They have not let their standards drop and continue to accrue county titles at underage level. It is a tall order for our lads and we wish them all the luck in the world and encourage every man, woman and child in Tallow to make the trip to Walsh Park. We also think of those who can't be there especially Timmy Mc Carthy who is currently visiting his daughter Aoife in Australia. It's difficult to think of a Tallow match, training session or puckaround that Timmy has missed over the years but hopefully the worldwide web will live up to its name and he'll be listening.
