Understanding Underage Success

A Limerick man I know well is fond of sighing and grimacing when I remind him of how well Limerick are going at underage and colleges level. He says it's great 'as long as they don't win anything'. A veteran of the u21 All Ireland three in a row celebrations, he is in no doubt that underage success sates the appetite of players to improve and kick on to become long-term senior players. The success of a Kerry team regularly beaten up a stick by Cork and Tipperary at underage level maybe provides more evidence of this theory. Mikey Sheehy was speaking about this in the papers at the weekend talking about how Kerry were shocked by their hammering by over twenty points by Cork in a Munster u21 semifinal three years ago and how they adjusted their underage conditioning programmes accordingly. From the team beaten by Cork they mined Peter Crowley, Fionn Fitzgerald and of course James O Donoghue while Cork have stagnated badly at senior level, their better footballers, some with senior medals already, looking for other challenges. The Limerick minors and the Wexford under 21s of the last few weeks each contained players who you would earmark as being well able for senior intercounty hurling and without success and civic receptions and adulation they'll be in a better position to make the step.
