8ht Grade Word Activity 5

The Radio Station

Scenario: The content coordinator for local radio station is leaving on vacation. You have been hired to fill in. Much of the work you will be performing involves finding information that can be used for between-music fillers, contests, news, and weather. You will rely heavily on the Internet for many of these tasks.

1. Open up a word processing document. This document will eventually contain all of the information you will be researching for the radio station. It will look like a script for the DJ. Follow each step and label each section as directed. Radio stations in the U.S. are given “call letters”. Usually, stations located east of the Mississippi River start with “W” and those west of the Mississippi start with a “K”. Often the call letters become a word – KDGE – The Edge or WFOX – The Fox. Be creative.

2.Title this first section – Weather. Your job is to locate the three-day weather forecast for the city where your radio station is located. Be sure to keep track of the website where you get the information, you will have to write down the web address. Start your page by writing… Looking ahead at this week’s weather we find that: then create a table. Fill in the information.

3. In this section, you will locate events that happened on this day in history. The late-night S.K. (So Kool) Jennings is a history buff. On his “Blast from the Past” segment, he likes to provide listeners with information about historical or interesting events that happened in years past on today’s date. For his program tonight, list three events that occurred on today’s date. These do not have to be particularly significant events –just interesting. They can even be during the same month.

4. During the morning show before the birthday giveaway, the DJ announces famous birthdays. Find two famous birthdays for today’s date.

5. During the birthday segment, the DJ also reads the horoscope for today’s birthday celebrators. Find the horoscope for today’s date and your horoscope for today. On your document it should look like this:

Today’s birthday horoscope: (Write what it says)

Your horoscope for today: (Write what it says)

This Link may be helpful.

6. The final piece of research you need to do for today’s radio shows involves a trivia contest. A local movie rental store is sponsoring a trivia contest. The winner receives 25 free movie rentals. Using the Internet prepare a list of 15 questions for a favorite movie of yours. It must be school appropriate. Questions can include actors, settings, famous quotes, etc. It should look like this.
