Open in PIXLR E
Use this link to go to the Students Files folder and make yourself a copy of Black and White Color.
Locate OPEN IMAGE and select Full HD and click Apply
Rename the image layer "original" and create 2 additional copies. Right Click the Layer and locate the duplicate icon. Make two copies and name the top Black and White, the next one color, and the bottom one Original. You can rename them when you right mouse click the layers.
When you right mouse click the layer, also click the Locked Icon. This will prevent you from making unwanted changes to that layer.
To change your Black and White Layer to truly be black and white, select the layer and go to the Adjustment tab and select Hue and Saturation. Change the Saturation to -100. This will un-saturate the color and what you see in the preview Image is Black and White.
Notice the checkboxes each of the three layers has. Clicking the checkbox off "turns off" the layer allowing you to see what is under it. clicking the Black and White layer off lets you see the color image under it. This is very important.
We are now going to add a mask to the Black and White layer. This mask will be pained on the Black and White layer and it will allow the image underneath to show through the mask.
Click on your Black and White Layer and go to the Layer tab and click Add Mask. A new icon shows up on the layer that looks like a pair of scissors to indicate there is a mask.
Up at the top click the Paint Brush Icon that says, "Add Mask" and over where it says Mode: click Add Mask.
Change the size of your Brush Tool using the , and . buttons and paint the apple. The Mask you are painting is the Black and White layer. The Apple is being changed from Color to Black and White.
If you make a mistake and paint over the woman's hand, up at the top, you can change the Mode to Remove Mask and paint the mask away.
Once you have neatly painted your mask over the apple and the image is of a woman eating an Apple that is Black and White, you are ready to save your project.
Go up to the File Tab and select Save. Set your File Type to PXD and Click DOWNLOAD. The PXD file can then be opened up later and you can continue to work.

Choose either the cat's eyes or nose to remain colorful for this image. If you did both, it would not be as dramatic an effect! (Image credit - Amiya Nanda)
