Excel Map Coordinates Challenge!

Vocabulary:

Map: A diagram that represents an area of land and water as well as other physical features. Man-made features can also be part of the diagram.

  • Review coordinates using Excel's rows and columns to locate information.

  • Compare and contrast Excel with Word and PowerPoint

  • Review and explore the ribbon tabs.

  • Using the mouse or the keyboard arrows to navigate the rows and columns.

  • Explore and evaluate how to locate things on a map.

Map Legend: Maps use symbols or colors to represent things. The map Key explains what they mean.

Rows: The line of squares that go across the page. They are identified by letters.

Columns: The line of squares that go up and down the page. They are identified by letters of the alphabet.

Coordinates: The letter and number of a box in the worksheet that represents a location. Follow where the letter and the number meet when you move your finger along the row and column.

Activity: Evaluating the legend, use copy and paste to put the symbols on the map.

Instructions:

  • Locate the Activity Backpack under 5th Grade Computer Essentials and download Map Coordinates Challenge. You may also use the Edmodo link.

  • Click enable editing so you can change the document.

  • There are eleven sites of interest on the map. You have the coordinated you need to copy and paste the icon into the location on the map where it needs to be.

  • Remember you can right mouse toolbox or use your keyboard shortcuts.

  • You can check their answers by clicking on the symbol on the map and looking in the name box in the top left corner of the Excel window.

  • Before you close you work, make sure you (Save As) and browse to save it to your documents folder. Turn it in to Edmodo then close your work just to be safe.
