Vocabulary:

Map: A diagram that represents an area of land and water as well as other physical features. Man-made features can also be part of the diagram.

    • Review coordinates using Excel's rows and columns to locate information.

    • Compare and contrast Excel with Word and PowerPoint

    • Review and explore the ribbon tabs.

    • Using the mouse or the keyboard arrows to navigate the rows and columns.

    • Explore and evaluate how to locate things on a map.

Map Legend: Maps use symbols or colors to represent things. The map Key explains what they mean.

Rows: The line of squares that go to the page. They are identified by numbers.

Columns: The line of squares that go up and down the page. They are identified by letters of the alphabet.

Coordinates: The letter and number of a box in the worksheet that represents a location. Follow where the letter and the number meet when you move your finger along the row and column.

Activity: Eleven sites of interests are shown on a 20 by 20 grid map of a city. The students are to determine the coordinates of the spots using Excel's rows and columns.

Instructions:

  • Locate the Activity Backpack under 5th Grade Computer Essentials and download Map Coordinates.

  • Click enable editing so you can change the document.

  • There are eleven sites of interest on the map. For each item on the map, the students are to determine the coordinates where it is located and fill in their answers in a table provided. The first is done for them.

  • You can check their answers by clicking on the symbol on the map and looking in the name box in the top left corner of the Excel window.
