    • Compare different representations of the same data and evaluate.

    • Analyze how decisions about graphing affect the representation.

    • Identify untrue or inappropriate statements.

Vocabulary:Rows: The line of squares that go across the page. They are identified by numbers. Columns: The line of squares that go up and down the page. They are identified by letters of the alphabet.

Coordinates: The letter and number of a box in the worksheet that represents a location. Follow where the letter and the number meet when you move your finger along the row and column.

Sheets: At the bottom of the page there are three sheets. Each sheet has a new table and data. You can keep track of even more data.

Activity: Three different sets of data (earnings, votes, heights) are shown with three different types of graphs (line, bar, circle). The student is to compare the different graphs to determine which is the best representation.

Instructions:

1. Open the spreadsheet Comparing Graphs by using the link in Edmodo.

2. The workbook has three spreadsheets, each showing different data (earnings from babysitting service, votes for favorite food, heights of basketball team players).

3. Each worksheet has three graphs, showing the data in different ways (line, bar, and circle graphs).

4. For each sheet, examine the data to see what is being analyzed. Then compare the three graphs of that data. Which graph best represents the data? Why?

This is a good way to understand the different representations of data and the best use of each.
