According to Lucy, Dom is extremely annoyed with his mother. Apparently, she button-holed Father Nat after Mass this morning and cross-examined him about the feasibility of Dom and Mariam being married in church. Dom sees it as unwarranted interference, and Ruth is now even more anxious because Father Nat told her that, even if the bishop gave permission, it wouldn’t be a sacrament because Mariam isn’t baptised. I sometimes wonder if it wouldn’t be better if the Church got out of the marriage business altogether and encouraged everyone to go for a Registry Office one!
