Well! The good news is that we have all arrived safe and sound at our Aparthotel. Unfortunately that’s about all the good news there is. Well – that’s not quite fair: the apartment is actually very nice (much better than the picture, which is the view from the roof garden above the bar) and we met some very nice lads from the apartment next door who have been very helpful. They’re students from the University of Liverpool – so, of course you would expect them to be lovely people! At least that has to mean that they have excellent taste.
The bad, bad, very bad news is that Jonah’s chair was damaged during the flight. We all had some rather uncharitable thoughts about Baggage Handlers, which we tried not to voice. The controller has been smashed, so it can’t be driven and the reclining mechanism etc. doesn’t work. We needed the students to help us push Jonah in it up the steep slope to the apartment.
We are all doing our best to stay calm and make the best of things, but if we can’t get the chair fixed that’s going to be difficult. I can see that Lucy blames herself for insisting on us bringing Jonah – and he knows it and is trying not to let her see how upset he is about being thrust back into a situation of total dependence on other people. I’m glad that one of the students was having a night in while his mates went off clubbing and we invited him round for a game of scrabble, which took our minds off things a bit.
