Peter and Lucy are back. They both enjoyed the trip and Lucy has a new friend in the person of Ibrahim’s younger sister Mariam, who is only a few months older than Lucy. They are both very taken with the idea that this is the same name as Mary. Lucy has taught Mariam the Hail Mary and Our Father. Peter was a bit worried about this, but her father assured him that it was OK. All three children (Ibrahim, Mariam and their older brother Mohammed) were allowed to take part in the “collective act of worship” that is still supposed to happen in state schools and he is keen for them to understand about other faiths as well as Islam.
Mariam also wants to do a medical degree, so Lucy and she have a surprising amount in common. They’ve been comparing notes on which universities have the best courses. Mariam’s mother would like her to stay in the Northwest – maybe Liverpool, like her brother – but Mariam is hankering after getting a bit further away from home.
