Unbelievably bad news! Abigail has been stolen from her buggy while Crystal was playing with Ricky on the swings at the recreation ground. We can still hardly believe that it’s really happening. Crystal left the buggy under the trees at the edge of the playground while she pushed Ricky in the swing and helped him on the see-saw and the slide. Abigail was asleep, so she thought she’d be OK for a while on her own. She was never more than a few yards away from her. But when it was time to go home, she came back to the buggy and Abigail was gone!
Jonah was called to the scene, because nobody knew, until he arrived and recognised Crystal, that he knew her. There was a bit of debate about whether he might have a conflict of interest, but Chief Superintendent Brown ruled in the end that the delay in finding someone else and getting them up to speed wouldn’t be justified – especially since pretty well everyone in Thames Valley knows Peter because he was a police officer for so long.
We all hoped that she’d be found quite quickly, seeing as the abduction could only have happened minutes before Crystal found out about it, so the culprit couldn’t have got far. However, despite Jonah defying my rules about out-of-hours working and going back to the incident room after tea, we all had to head off for bed without any idea what can have happened to Abigail.
To add to our worries, Nathan rang to say that Rachel is in hospital with suspected meningitis. And, as if all that were not enough, Anna Davenport has just found out that the baby that she’s expecting in November will almost certainly have spina bifida.
