What a day!
We knew something was wrong when Gavin Hughes rolled up at our house before breakfast. He'd been working the night shift and he called in on the way home to let us know that Wayne had been involved in a road traffic accident. It was a hit-and-run outside the Blackbird pub on Blackbird Leys Road, where he'd been having a few drinks with some friends from the rugby club that he belongs to. Gavin was one of the first on the scene after someone dialled 999. He saw Wayne safely off in an ambulance and then went to let Dean know what had happened. He had to get him out of bed because Wayne had told him not to wait up.
Of course, Jonah's immediate reaction was to try to take over the investigation into who was responsible. Well, after insistnig on being taken over to the neuro-ICU to see how Wayne was doing. He'd hit his head when he was knocked down and the doctors were concerned that he might have bleeding in the brain. To cut a long story short, Anna Davenport has been put in charge of the case, and Jonah has been forced to bow out for the time being. I don't know how long that will last, especially once he gets back into work on Monday, by which time Anna will have had to hand over to someone else, because she's only working weekends at the moment. She's finding it tough to get childcare for little Donna. She's negotiated (with Jonahs help) a two-day week for the next three months, while she gradually gets back into the swing of things after her maternity leave. Luckily her other daughter, Jessica, seems keen to babysit.
The latest on Wayne is that he's being kept in a coma to give his brain time to recover from the trauma. Until they bring him out of that, it's impossible to know how much damage has been done or whether there will be any permanent disability as a result. Poor Dean seems completely shell-shocked. We were all very relieved when Gavin told us that Wayne's parents were there to look after him.
We had a bit of an awkward moment at tea time. Eddie and Crystal were here with the two kids. Naturally we were all talking about Wayne and Dean. It turned out that neither Eddie nor Crystal had any idea that they were a couple. Crystal, having been brought up in Jamaica where homosexuality is still illegal, was quite shocked. I could see that even Eddie, with his much better knowledge of British Society in the 21st century, was taken aback. It was only then that I realised how much has changed since he emigrated to the Caribbean in 2004.
It's an early night for all of us now. After all, we know that Jonah will be insisting on a packed programme tomorrow, trying to poke his nose into Anna's investigation!
