Peter and I got out in the garden today, leaving Jonah snug inside working on his memoirs. We planted two rows of seed potatoes, having found spuds in short supply in the shops. We feel as if we're "digging for victory"! We discovered afterwards that, while we were out of the way, Jonah had been on to Alison Brown, picking her brains about what she could remember of the case. It turns out she was a humble PC in those days and was one of the first officers on the scene when the murder was discovered.
Peter went out for a walk in the afternoon and managed to arrange to cross paths with Gavin who was patrolling Headington, checking that everyone is adhering to the COVID-19 lockdown regulations. They couldn't have a proper conversation, because of having to keep to the 2-metre social distancing rule, but at least Peter's feeling a bit happier that Gavin's bearing up OK. He told Peter that Craig has been accepted as a volunteer delivering food parcels to vulnerable people who are self-isolating with no family or friends to support them. In fact, I get the impression that he's organising the effort! His military training makes those sorts of logistics right up his street. Let's hope that, when this is all over, it will help him to get a proper job.
The homeless shelter has been closed down, because communal living space isn't compatible with self-isolation. Gavin and Craig were worried that this would mean that the residents would end up on hte streets, but Oxford City Council has found two hotels that are willing to take them in. The plan is for rough sleepers to be put up in hotels too. I don't know how the likes of Dave Gillis and Doug Finney are going to take that. They actually seem to prefer the freedom of sleeping on the streets to staying in a hostel, but maybe the greater privacy of a hotel will persuade them that it is safe to be within four walls.
