It’s going to be a strange May Morning tomorrow: no choir boys singing madrigals from the top of Magdalen College tower; no Morris dancers in the streets; no breakfast punt parties on the river; no students ignoring the warning and evading the authorities to jump into the water from Magdalen Bridge! We’ll be staying put out here in Headington, working in the garden, in between the April showers that have finally arrived to break the spring drought, and continuing to work through all those volumes of diaries that Richard left behind when he died. Jonah’s finished the first volume of his memoirs, so now he’s looking for inspiration as to which case to tackle next. I suggested that he might like to write about some of the things he got up to while he was a DI in South Oxfordshire, after he was transferred out of Richard’s team, but I think he’d rather choose something from earlier in his career, so that it would follow on more neatly from what he’s just written. Well, it’s up to him to decide!
