This week is turning out not to be a good one! Last night's match ended up with Barcelona thrashing Liverpool 3-nil, which makes Liverpool's chances of getting through to the final virtually nil too! But far worse than that was the news this morning that Mariam and two of her friends have been injured in an acid attack on a group of students outside the Guild of Students building on Mount Pleasant. We were up early, wanting to get on the road before the traffic builds, so we'd already heard the radio news report when Lucy rang to let us know that Mariam was involved. It sounds as if she wasn't hurt as badly as one of the others, but it still sounds pretty awful. Apparently they were all Muslims and two of them were wearing hijabs, so the chances are it's another of those anti-Muslim attacks that seem to be on the increase everywhere - even Liverpool, it seems!
Update
You'll never guess who the Senior Investigating Officer for the acid attack case is! Well, I suppose you will, because there's only one senior officer that we really know in Merseyside Police. It's DCI Sandra Latham, whom you may remember from our earlier encounters in 2016 and 2017. Of course, Jonah insisted on grilling her on progress so far - not much yet, as you might expect. Mariam and one of her friends have been transferrred to the regional burns unit at Whiston. Peter and Lucy went on the bus to see her at afternoon visiting, while Jonah and I spent a couple of hours with Sandra and her team. It seems that Mariam isn't as badly hurt as they thought at first, but her friend Salma is in a bad way. They're keeping Mariam in overnight while they assess her to see if she'll need any skin grafts, but she's hoping she may be allowed out by the weekend.
