It seems that I spoke too soon when I said that Aunty Dot was OK and her Care Home wasn't affected by the pandemic. Joey rang this afternoon to tell us that one of the residents has been admitted to hospital with suspected COVID-19 (the test results are expected tomorrow) and two others are exhibiting symptoms. Dot is insisting that she's unlikely to catch it because she's a trained nurse and so knows all about proper hand hygiene, but I can't help remembering her scathing remarks about how some of the younger staff could do with having the matron under who she trained teaching them not to cut corners with that sort of thing. Mind you, they will presumably all have been given new training in hygiene since the current crisis started, so maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily. Let's hope so.
Thames Valley Police are calling on all officers who retired in the last 2 years to come back to fill gaps caused by officers being off sick or self-isolating. Peter isn't included, of course, because he retired way back in 2011, but he's wondering whether he ought to volunteer for something. Now that he doesn't have the grandkids to look after, he's feeling that he's not making a contribution. I'm not so sure that it would be a good idea. I'd rather have him here, so that if one of us goes down with the virus there will still be someone to look after Jonah (and Stan's pigeons!). The Met are even more desperate for more officers; they're asking everyone who left within the last 5 years to consider coming back.
