It was inevitable, but still a shock when it did come. Boris has finally bitten the bullet and put in place legislation so that the government can order us all to stay at home, instead of just advising it. In our police-orientated household, the first question, naturally enough was, "How are they going to enforce it?" The short answer, of course, was that the police wil have powers to arrest peopel and levy fines, but that leaves so many questions unanswered: how will they identify whether someone has a legitimate reason for being out of their house or not? If everyone is allowed to go out for exercise once a day, how do they tell if someone is actually going out multiple times? If you go shooping by bicycle, does that mean that you've already had your exercise for the day, or can you go out again? If a group of people are out together, how can you tell whether or not they all live together (and so are allowed to congregate) or don't (so ought to keep two metres apart)? And most difficult to answer of all: where are the officers going to come from to monitor everyone's movements in such detail? There are already a good number of officers off work because of having had contact with potential carriers of the virus. As more are affected, it's going to get harder and harder even to keep on top of "ordinary" crime, without having to cope with arresting a whole lot of otherwise upright citizens who are ignorant of the new rules or just plain stupid!
