Jonah tore Monica off a strip for her insensitive handling of Wayne and his family yesterday. She very wisely gave up arguing and promised to go round this evening to apologise. That rather took the wind out of Jonah’s sails and he had to admit that at least she wasn’t afraid to own up to her mistakes.
Father Damien called on Wayne this afternoon – and then came over to see us this evening to give us an update on his condition. He made out that, as one of the hospital chaplains, it was just a routine visit, but he did admit that he knew us. I think he had to do that in order to reassure him that he understood about him and Dean and wasn’t planning to criticise their “lifestyle”. He says that Wayne is still struggling to talk, but it’s clear that his cognition isn’t impaired, which is a relief. They’ve had him out of bed, sitting up in a chair, which is also a promising development.
After Father Damien left, we got a phone call from Crystal, also updating us on Wayne. She’d gone to the ward during her lunchbreak to see how he was. It was kind of her, especially when you consider how nervous she was about the idea of meeting a homosexual. Poor girl! It’s been quite a culture shock coming over here in some ways.
