When we went back to Lichfield to talk to Old Bernard, we bumped into Paula Wellesley in the quad (not literally, of course, because of social distancing!) She’s still living in College, because she doesn’t have anywhere else to go. She put us on to Graham Weldon, the Chemistry fellow, who used to row for the college years ago – maybe when our corpse was buried. He confirmed that the cuff-link is one of a set that the Boat Club has made back in 1983. He even has a pair of them himself! But he wasn’t able to tell us the names and addresses of the other people who had them. So, we’re not a great deal further on.
While Jonah was briefing the team on what we’d learned from Professor Weldon, I had another go at ringing Yvonne Whittle. This time I got through, but she was very reticent about accepting help. I get the impression that her husband doesn’t want anyone outside the family knowing about their money problems and she’s doing all this behind his back. I’ve given her the number of the church debt advice line, but we’re no further forward with sorting out her CICA application.
