本論文は、幕末期に活躍した長州藩家老、浦靱負(うらゆきえ)の残した『浦日記』の記述に依拠して幕末維新史の「本質」を探ることを目的としている。浦靱負は、文政期から明治三年までの四十五年間、六十二冊の日記を後世に残した。この日記は「七一藩臣日記」として分類され、当初毛利家文庫に保存されていた。現在は山口県文所館で保存・管理されている。浦日記は、内容の精密さから言えば、「日誌」と言える内容のものである。浦日記には、日常のこまごまとした事柄やまた、幕府や藩の沙汰書、達書、建白書など朝廷や幕府、藩政府および中央政局が発した様々な史料がそのまま写し取ってあり、浦日記は、幕末維新史をひもとく上で第一級の史料と言える。
本論文作成の準備にあたって、膨大な分量の浦日記のうち浦靱負の人生上の結節点、つまり彼のターニング・ポイントの時期の日記を抽出してカメラに納め解読作業を行った。本論文では、浦日記に記述されている内容の時代的背景を論じ、分析を施すことで、幕末維新史の実相に迫り、その本質を探り出すことを試みている。

This thesis represents the research into the historical meanings of the termination of the Tokugawa Regime and the Meiji Restoration through the “Ura Nikki" Diary.
The Diary was written by Mr. Ura Yukie (1795-1870), the Karo or the government official of the Choshu Clan which is presently called Yamaguch prefecture. Mr. Ura Yukie wrote the Diary for forty-five years from the 8th year of Bunsei (1825) to the 3rd year of MeiJi (1870) totaling sixty-two volumes.
This thesis consists of two chapters with three sections for each.
They’re as follows :
Chapter one: The first section analyzes the meanings of “Mousiwatashi Sho” or the letter of mandate issued by Tokugawa regime and “Taimei Sho" or the letter of obedience both of which were issued after the first punitive hunting down Choshu- Han by Tokugawa regime. The second section shows the writing of “Ura Nikki” illustrating the process of the second punitive hunting down Choshu-Han, through “Soumon Sho” or written opinions of the Tycoon Iemochi to the Emperor Koumei and the documents “Tatsushi Mono” or the direction from Tokugawo regime to Choshu-Han. The third section tells about Akane Taketo(1838-69), Ura Yukie’s feudatory, who was executed because he searched the solution through “Koubu Gattai” or the unity of Tokugawa regime and the Imperial Court after the first punitive hunt down by Tokugawa regime.
Chapter two: The first section presents the article of “Ura Nikki” noting sending troops to Kyoto with alliance of Choshu-Han and Satsuma-Han and states both the progresses and the meanings of the restitution of the sovereign of Choshu-Han and his successor in the official ranks. Second section traces the progress and the meanings through “Ura Nikki” how the samurai fell down through "hanseki houkan" or relinquishing their domain to the court and "haihan chiken" or the establishment of prefectural system. The section also shows the article in Ura Nikki the rebellion of the troops against the restructuring the troops of Choshu-Han toward the local government. The third section introduces the final page of Ura Nikki showing one word “Tome” or the end, and examines the meanings of Ura Yukie’s death.
