Make it Balance!
What am I learning?
*I am understanding equations
*I am understanding the idea of balance.
How can I make sure I am successful?
*to look for the clues
*to create balance by adding or removing elements.
Activity description/steps:
Read through the first section around introduction to equations.
First Diagram
This diagram is of a set of scales. The two circles are not as heavy as one square. These scales are not balanced as there are different weights on each side. What is needed to balance these scales?
Second Diagram
On this set of balance scales, the three circles are the same weight as one square. These scales are balanced because there is the same weight on both sides. If there were two squares on one side, how many circles would you need on the other side to balance the scales?
Third Diagram
These scales have the number 5 on the left side and the number 9 on the right side. We could write this as 5 + : = 9, where the : is the number missing, needed to balance these scales. 5 + : = 9 is called an equation. This equation can also be written as 9 – : = 5. What number needs to be added to the left side to balance these
scales? Finding this number is called solving the equation.
