Numeracy - Y3&4

Exploring Probability

What am I learning?

  • Play a game to explore probability/Chance

How can I make sure I am successful?

  • Follow the instructions

  • Play the game a few times

  • Explain the rules to someone

Activity description/steps:

  1. To play this game you need an ordinary 6-sided die. Use the online one here if you do not have one

  2. Each turn of the game consists of one or more rolls of the die. You keep rolling until you decide to stop, or until you roll a 1. You may choose to stop at any time

  3. If you roll a 1, your score for that turn is 0

  4. If you choose to stop rolling before you roll a 1, your score is the sum of all the numbers you rolled on that turn

  5. The player with the highest score wins.

  6. Each player has 10 turns each only

  7. You need to find someone to play with and you need to play this game a few times to get used to how the is played

  8. Write down why you decided to save your score

  9. At the end of the ten rolls check if you and your partner have a different strategy on how you played, write them down and see which strategy is best

  10. Explain why you think it is the best strategy to use to win the game

Repeating Patterns

*Christmas/Celebration Wrap!*

What am I learning?

To create and repeat patterns to make Christmas/Celebration Wrapping Paper

How can I make sure I am successful?

Create Christmas art stamps/techniques using cardboard

Create an effective repeating christmas pattern for your piece of wrapping paper

Activity description/steps:

Wrapping paper is made beautiful because of its use of repeating patterns. You might think this is art activity, but in actual fact creating repeating patterns requires mathematical thinking.

  1. Create 2 -5 patterns that you will stamp onto paper to make your wrapping design.

Two examples are shown below:

  • A pohutukawa flower stamped with the edge of cardboard with paint. Pollen dots made with the tip of a paintbrush!

Christmas lights on a wire using a thumb print in paint to stamp the pattern with paint

You might also like to create an idea for stars, christmas trees, or snowflakes - it is up to you!

  1. Plan how your pattern will look on your paper. What colours will you use? How will you create an effective REPEATING pattern?

  1. Either horizontally or vertically across your paper, stamp/paint/draw your repeating pattern.

Once complete and dry, you have your very own wrapping paper to keep and use this christmas!

Extras for early finishers

Once this is complete, write a description of how this shows a pattern repeated. Notice the mathematical language you use in your writing. Underline these words with a highlighter!

Resources:

-Variety of paint colours (or another resource you want to use)

- cardboard edge for pohutakawa

-black marker

- A3 paper

- Tip of paintbrushes

How can I make sure I am successful?

-Have a topic

-Write 3 (or more) sentences about the SAME THING on the topic

-Edit your paragraph

Activity description/steps:

We are fantastic at writing sentences BUT we need practice writing paragraphs!

I like to say paragraphs are 2-3 (or more) sentences about the SAME thing within a topic.

Your TOPIC is yourself! And your first paragraph is 3 sentences (or more) JUST describing yourself, nothing else just describing things about how you look and your personality.

1.Write 3 (or more) sentences (miss lines) JUST describing yourself. PS Really positive things about yourself!

2.Re-read your 1st paragraph about describing yourself and make sure you have just written sentences describing yourself.
