Activity description/steps:

In readiness for this problem, the students should have familiarity with each of the following components of mathematics. The problem may be solved with different combinations of these components.

• length

• units of length (cm, m)

• using non-standard units for measurement

• fractions

• addition of basic fractions (½, ¼)

This activity may be carried out with guidance, or by allowing the student to follow their own method of solution. The approach should be chosen in sympathy with students’ skills and depth of understanding.

7. Do you think the story would be funny without Parrot? Why or why not?

What am I learning?

To make connections between our prior knowledge (of jungles, gardens, and garden creatures) to identify main points, and visualise how the insects and spiders catch and eat their food.

How can I make sure I am successful?

*To read the journal article “The Jungle In My Garden”

*To readout aloud or in my head

*To figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words using words around them as a guide.

*To answer the questions about the article by being a word spy

Activity description/steps:

1. Read through the journal story “There's a Jungle In my Garden”,

2. Make a copy of the google doc,
   Jungle in Garden -Comprehension Questions or use to complete questions on a piece of paper.

3. Answer all questions using FULL sentences.

4. Have a go at writing the definitions of some of those words too!

Head outside and find some of your very OWN insects in your garden! Once you have found a couple, do some research on those insects and send us some facts you find!

How can I make sure I am successful?

• Find some treasures or natural things in or around the house! It could be anything..get creative!

• Lay the item on paper or card and add body part cut outs from magazines so show your thinking

• You will be successful if you item looks like it could be real!

Activity description/steps:

Go on a treasure hunt to find extra small pieces that look like they could become:

.. a pair of pants, a top, a hat, a bag or anything else you could wear or carry!

Place it on paper or card then draw or add cutouts from magazines to create figures or parts of figures to go with it!

Make as many as you can and take a photo to record each creation.
