What am I learning?
*to create a porotiti.
How can I make sure I am successful?
*I try my best
*If it doesn’t work the first time, I try again
*I’m having fun!
Activity description/steps:
Porotiti are part of the taonga pouro group of Māori musical instruments that are linked with Tāwhirimātea, the guardian/god of the wind.
They are traditionally made from pounamu (greenstone), bone or wood but we will make ours with cardboard.
1. Make the disk
Draw around the cup so you have two circles on the cardboard. Cut them both out and glue or tape them together.
2. Decorate
Be creative! Colour in both sides of your disc. Use lots of different colours, glitters and patterns.
3. Thread string
In the middle of your disc, poke 2 holes about 1cm apart. Get an adult to help you with this. Measure out 60cm of string and thread the string through the holes. Tie the ends together with a firm knot
4. Make it spin
To spin, thread your middle finger of each hand in the loop ends of the string with the porotiti in the middle. Wind the string up by twirling the portiti in a circular motion towards your body until it feels tight against your fingers.
Then push your hands together and then pull your hands apart in a continuous motion. Your porotiti will then start to create a beautiful sound! Here is a link to a video that shows the amazing Whaea Jess with her porotiti: Video
TIPS:
-Try and poke the holes as close to the middle as possible so you porotiti is even.
-The heavier the better! If two layers of cardboard isn’t enough, try again with 3! Whaea Jess wrapped her porotiti in black tape to make it heavier.
-Practice makes perfect! Keep trying if your porotiti doesn’t make a sound the first time.
