Grid Reference

t2-m-278-animal-grid-references-activity-sheet-_ver_4.pdf

What am I learning?

To read a grid reference.

How can I make sure I am successful?

  • Look carefully at the zebra example

  • Understand that the letter (x-axis) comes before the number (y-axis) in coordinates

  • Find the coordinates of the zoo animals

Activity description/steps:

Today we are going to learn how to read a basic grid map.

  1. Open up the worksheet.

  2. Your job is to find all of the coordinates for each animal. A coordinate is the exact location of an object on the map.

  3. You’ll see that along the sides of the map (the X an Y axis) there are numbers and letters. These numbers and letters will give you the coordinates.

  4. When you write down the coordinates you always put first the letter at the bottom axis before the number on the side.

  5. Let’s look at the coordinates of the zebra. The coordinates of the zebra is b8, have a look at the orange arrows to show how we got that answer.

  6. Your job is to find the rest of the coordinates for the other zoo animals. Remember, the letter always comes before the number.

Extras for early finishers

Create your own zoo grid map and challenge your friend to find the coordinates of your animals.
