Mental Maths

maths week 3.pdf

What am I learning?

*How to revise doubling and halving

How can I make sure I am successful?

*I can solve the problems using mental maths

*I start with either doubling or halving the biggest number place, then the second, etc.(e.g. For 123 you start by doubling 100, then 20, then 3)

Activity description/steps:

Today, we’re going to practise using mental maths to double or half numbers!

We’re going to use a technique in order to do so. If we wanted to double the number 42, we would first double 40, then double 2 and add them.

80 + 4= 84

If we wanted to half a number we would use the same technique.

Half of 264 is:

Half of 200 add half of 60 add half of 4.

100 + 30 +2= 132

Use those techniques to complete the worksheet! Try your best at using mental maths for as much as you can, but feel free to write it out using the technique above if you get stuck. Complete the first worksheet first. If it took you less than 30 minutes, do the second as well. You only need to do one if it was too hard or took longer than 30 minutes.

The art of applying henna to the hands and feet is known as Mehndi, and is traditionally used for celebrations and rites of passage. Indian tattoos feature fine lines and floral patterns. Give it a go and colour it in, or design your own! Outline your hand on a piece of paper and get designing.

Diamante Poem

What am I learning?

*About the origins of Diwali

How can I make sure I am successful?

*Read the text slowly and carefully

*Fill out the Venn Diagram to the best of your ability

*Record yourself reading

Activity description/steps:

Before you begin reading, have a kōrero with a family member about what you already know about Diwali.

Read this article on “The Story of Diwali”. Once you’ve read it once, get your recording device out and record yourself reading it a second time. Make sure to send this through to your teacher.

Your next step is to create a Venn Diagram about the similarities and differences between Diwali and Matariki. What values are similar between the two cultures? How are they different? Have a look at the links in the Resources if you need help.

Once you’ve finished that, have a think about how your family celebrates the New Year. What traditions do you have? What time of the year is it? Write 3-5 sentences about it.

Make sure to send all your work to your teacher.

Edit

What am I learning?

  • To edit our piece of persuasive writing

How can I make sure I am successful?

  • EDIT our persuasive writing for making sense, punctuation and spelling

Activity description/steps:

1.Re-read our letter to Minister Hipkins aloud that we wrote yesterday and see if it makes sense. Put in or takeaway any words that are needed to make sure it makes sense.

Check our writing for punctuation. Does it need capitals, full stops, commas or other parts of punctuation?

Check your writing for spelling mistakes. Use a dictionary or sound it out again to make sure you have all the letters for the words.

4.Use a red pen to EDIT if you have one so that your corrections stand out when you go to PUBLISH tomorrow.

5.Ask a family member to assess your writing to make sure you have edited your story for sense, punctuation and spelling.

Antonym Diamante Poem

diwali-crafts-paper-marigold-garland-guide.pdf
Diamante Poem_ Antonyms.pdf

What am I learning?

*To create my own antonym diamante poem

How can I make sure I am successful?

*I have chosen two words that are antonyms

*I follow the directions for each line

Activity description/steps:

Remember how you created a synonym diamante poem last week? Well this week we’re going to make an antonym one! Remember, an antonym is a word opposite in meaning to another (e.g. good and bad)

Remember these few rules when it comes to writing a diamante–

  1. Diamantes are 7 lines long.

  2. The first and last lines have just one word (these will be the two words that are synonyms). The second and sixth have two words. The third and fifth lines have three words. And the fourth line has four words.

  3. Lines 1, 4, and 7 have nouns. Lines 2 and 6 have adjectives. Lines 3 and 5 have verbs.

It’ll look like this–

Noun

Adjective, adjective

Verb, verb, verb

Noun, noun, noun, noun

Verb, verb, verb

Adjective, adjective

Noun

Check out the example poem about winter and summer. These two seasons are antonyms since winter is cold and summer is hot. Notice how in the middle line the first two nouns relate to winter, and the last two relate to summer. That’s how you’ll break up that line.

Give it a go and make sure to share with your teacher!
