Here are today’s math equations for you to solve. The numbers are written out in Tongan. Challenge yourself with your knowledge of the Tongan language! Can you figure out what the numbers are without looking at the number chart?
Figure out the Tongan numbers in the math equation. It will help if you read the numbers out loud. Use the Tongan number chart if you’re not sure.
Solve the math equation using the correct order of operation.
Write the answer numerically and in Tongan.
Remember from yesterday’s math lesson the order of operations. It’s important to note that addition and subtraction have the same order, you just need to work out the operation that comes first from left to right. This is the same with multiplication and division.

What am I learning?
*I am learning about the history and symbolism of the Tongan flag.
How can I make sure I am successful?
*I have researched symbols and images important to Tongan culture.
*I have designed a flag that represents Tonga.
Activity description/steps:
Tonga has a long history with Christianity. English missionaries began to travel to Tonga in the 1830s to convert Tongans to the Christian faith. As King George Tupou I came onto the throne, he decided to create a new flag for Tonga. The King worked with Shirley Waldemar Baker, a member of the United Kingdom’s Tongan mission who later became the Prime Minister of Tonga, to create a flag that represented the importance of Christianity to the island nation.
The Tongan flag became official in 1875. The red background represents the blood of Jesus Christ, the white symbolizes purity, and the red cross-refers to Christianity. Approximately 97% of the Tongan population are Christian.
Throughout Tongan Language Week you would have learned a lot about the country, the culture and its people. Now your job is to design your very ownTongan flag. Search for images and symbols that are important to Tonga. Here are some ideas to start you off:
