Sugar Rush!

What am I learning?
*How to find out the percentage of a number.

How can I make sure I am successful?
*I can follow mathematical formulas correctly.
*I can read labels and choose the correct information for my purpose.

Activity description/steps:

Sugar is everywhere! Today we are going to find out how much sugar is in our food.

A 330ml can of coke contains 35g of sugar. What percentage of the coke is made up of sugar?

Use this 2-step formula to find out the percentage of sugar in the coke:

1. (amount of sugar) divide by (weight or volume) = (35 ÷ 330) = 0.106

2. (answer from step 1) multiply by 100 = (0.106) x 100 = 10.6%

A can of coke is made up of 10.6% of sugar.

Q1. One serving of raspberry jam is 15g. There is 10.3g of sugar in one serving. What percentage of the jam is made up of sugar? Use the 2-step formula and show your working.

1. (amount of sugar) divide by (weight or volume) = ( ) ÷ ( ) =

2. (answer from step 1) multiply by 100 = ( ) x 100 = %

Q2. Find 2 food items in your household and work out what percentage of sugar is in them. Show your 2-step formula for working out the percentage. If you can, post a photo of the nutrition label. Can you find a food item that is made up of over 50% sugar?

Extras for early finishers: A teaspoon can hold 5g of sugar. If there is 35g of sugar in a can of coke, how many teaspoons of sugar are there?

*I am learning to build strength and resilience through exercise.

How can I make sure I am successful?* I am engaging in regular physical activities.
*I can describe the benefits of physical activity to my well-being.

Activity description/steps:
Planking is an amazing exercise which develops your core strength, posture, and mental resilience.

All you need is a flat surface and a timing device.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHI_naQ3dSE

Watch the Youtube video which instructs you on the proper form for planking. It is essential that you distribute your weight across your entire body rather than leaning on your arms too much. Tighten your stomach and don’t let your hip drop too low. Focus your mind on your breathing.

Record how long you can hold your planking position with your timer. Take a break and try again. What is the longest time you can plank for? Do you think you could beat your time today if you try again tomorrow?

Post your time or a photo/ video of you planking on class dojo. Can you think of any benefits by planking every day?

Extras for early finishers: Keep a daily record of your planking times.

Resources: Flat surface and a device to record your time.
