Make an AIMMEE Statement
We can use the AIMMEE structure to support us to create statements on narrative photo series' that we have created. In the following example, I have imagined that I created the photo series and was required to write an AIMEE response. The series was actually created by Annette LeMay Burke. You should create an AIMMEE statement for your place-based series.
Audience
This photo series has been created for a photography blog to demonstrate how ideas can be creatively communicated through photography. It is also intended for my family to reflect on the images and the memories associated with them.
Intention
The intention behind this narrative photography project is to tell a story and convey a message about the significance of places in relation to family history. By projecting important family photos onto meaningful locations, I aim to show how places can hold different meanings for different generations. The series explores themes of memory, history, and the emotional connections we have with specific places.
Make
To create this photo series, I selected significant family photos and projected them onto locations that have been important to my family. I used wide shots and the rule of thirds to highlight various details in the photographs, such as the lamp and wallpaper in the first image. These elements evoke specific memories and contribute to the narrative. The use of a medium shutter speed was required to capture the projected image while balancing the natural lighting.
Method
In capturing the photos, I carefully planned the projection of the family images onto meaningful locations. I paid attention to camera settings, such as using a medium shutter speed to ensure the projected images were visible without being washed out by natural light. Compositionally, I employed the rule of thirds and wide shots to draw attention to key details in the scene.
Edit
During the editing process, I adjusted the brightness and contrast of the photos to make the projected images clearer and more prominent. These adjustments were crucial to ensuring that the narrative elements of the photos were easily discernible to the viewer.
Evaluate
This photo series successfully connects the idea of place with family history by showing how certain locations hold different meanings for various generations. For example, the first photo depicts my grandparents' home, which represents their first home, my parents' childhood home, and an older home I would visit during holidays. To enhance the series, I would take more photos using other family images projected in different locations, adding depth and variety to the narrative. Overall, the series effectively links the concepts of place and family, reflecting on their interwoven significance.
