Why use TEEAC?
The TEEAC Paragraph Structure is a structure that will help you break down the important parts of a paragraph to make sure you have communicated clearly and your audience can understand your work. This can be used in a variety of contexts, including explaining a Scientific Theory, writing an essay in English and responding to images in Art classes.
TEEAC Stands For:
Topic Sentence
Explanation & Evidence
Analysis
Conclusion
Using TEEAC to analyse Elements of Art & Principles of Design

Explanation & Evidence
This principle/ element has been used… (describe the image as if I cannot see it and tell me what the element does, in detail).

Example: Element of Art
Obey Giant (2023) 'Make Art Not War' URL
Topic
An element of art used in Shepard Fairey's 'Make Art Not War' is colour and conveys important parts of the artworks message.
Explanation & Evidence
In Shepard Fairey's 'Make Art Not War,' the colour scheme is red, black and white. The main subject, a woman's face depicted with flowers in her hair is shown as a black and white stamp effect. The background is a deep red with white text that says 'Make Art, Not War.' All of the colours are shown without texture, styled with a stamp effect that is similar to old war posters.
Analysis
Colour has been used to create meaning in this artwork in a variety of ways. Red is predominant colour in the design (as it takes up the most space). Red draws attention and symbolises urgency and importance and has also been historically associated with passion, activism, and strength, aligning with the underlying message of the artwork. The black and white create a strong contrast that reinforces the sense of opposition created in the poster. The sense of urgency, passion and opposition could energise audiences and call them to action, in agreement with the posters message.
Conclusion
The use of 'colour' in this design is highly effective in achieving its intended purpose. The bold and deliberate choice of red, black, and white contribute to the visual power of the artwork and also align to its message. This bold colour scheme makes the poster memorable and impactful.
Example: Principle of Design
Topic
A principle of design used in 'I Love New York' is balance which contributes to its iconic status.
Explanation & Evidence
In the 'I Heart NY' logo, the principle of balance has been used to create a simple and symmetrical composition. The letter 'I' and a symbol of a heart have been depicted with a close proximity, centred over the letters 'NY.' The heart is also symmetrical itself, with visual weight evenly distributed on either side. The space between the 'I' and heart and between the 'I heart' and 'NY' is similar, creating a balanced equilibrium in the design.
Analysis
Using balance in this design creates a harmonious composition which creates a sense of stability and order. By creating the balanced design and drawing viewer's attention to each element equally, the message is universally understood and memorable, a love for New York. This simple and easy to understand design has been used for over fifty years due to it's successful composition.
Conclusion
The use of balance in the 'I Heart NY' logo achieves its purpose because its symmetrical arrangement of elements creates a visually pleasing and stable composition that shows the love for New York in a clear, accessible and enduring way that has maintained its iconic status.

For Your Portfolio
Choose one of the images that you have annotated in another lesson (e.g. the image you analysed for Advertising Ethics or one of the images from the Emphasis and Hierarchy page).
Use the structure that we have just practiced to take your annotations and turn them in to a TEEAC paragraph about one of the elements or principles that you have identified.
