Persuasive Techniques
Pathos
Pathos serves as an appeal to emotion, aiming to persuade the audience by evoking emotional responses. Examples of pathos include the use of descriptive language, imagery, tapping into values and emotions, and sharing personal stories to resonate deeply with the audience.
Logos
Logos, as an appeal to logic, persuades the audience through rational thought and reason. This persuasive technique is often employed through the use of statistics, charts, data, and graphs as illustrations.
Ethos
Ethos, being an appeal to ethics, seeks to convince the audience of the persuader's character and credibility. In the realm of advertising, examples of ethos include highlighting credibility, authority, the endorsement of celebrities or brands and the use of specialised terms to establish trustworthiness and expertise.

For Your Portfolio
Choose one of the six film posters that we just discussed (three from Barbie, three from Oppenhiemer).
Copy and paste the following headings below your poster:
-Subject / Objects
-Background / setting
-Colour
-Font / Style
-Arrangement
-Words used
Begin with dot points under each category, then expand in to sentences to share your understanding on visual choices made by the creator of your chosen poster
Create a heading called 'Audience.'
Choose at least three demographic or psychographic elements from the list at the list at the top of this page. Explain how you believe the visual choices made in the poster targeted this type of audience.
Complete previous steps
Choose another from the three posters about the same film you just analysed (e.g. if you chose Barbie, stick with Barbie). Comment on the visual choices that were similar and different to the first poster that you analysed. Explain how this draws a different audience to the same film.
Create a subheading on your 'Poster Audience Analysis' page called 'Marketing Choices.'
After discussing the marketing choices from both Barbie and Oppenhiemer, find one article online that relates to the release of either of these films.
Provide the link to the article and APA reference it. Use guides here for APA support.
Identify elements of pathos, logos or ethos in the article.
Write either some dot points or a paragraph that show how the article used these elements.
Aim to identify and describe demographic or psychographic groups that could have been targeted by these choices.
Example: Grill'd (2023) 'Barbie Dreamburger' URL
Barbie teaming up with Grill'd on the release of the film is an example of ethos. This is because they are using cross-promotion to suggest that if you are going to see barbie, you should get a Barbie themed Grill'd burger. Both brands do well out of this deal as a movie watcher may eat a burger or a burger eater may watch the movie. This seems targeted towards young adults as they are likely to be eating at Grill'd due to it's customer base of mid-level income and people who sort of care about their health (e.g. eating burgers but burgers that are called healthy). This marketing choices has also been made to entice people eating at Grill'd within close proximity to a movie theatre or watching a movie within close proximity to a Grill'd.
Complete previous steps
Choose your own film poster from anywhere and analyse the same elements that you just did with Barbie or Oppenhiemer.
Write a paragraph on the graphic design choices made and a paragraph on the audience that this targets.
