Design is the creation of a plan for the construction of an object, system or visual work. It could be architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business
processes or sewing patterns. Design has different connotations in different fields.
Design is what links creativity and innovation. It shapes ideas to become practical and attractive ideas for users, clients or customers. Design may be described as creativity with purpose.

The principles of design describe the ways an artist use different elements of design in a composition. They come from the late nineteenth century, mainly in Western Europe, when people started using skills to evaluate what good art was instead of just the subject. This became a part of twentieth-century modernism and is how we evaluate good art and design today. You can learn more about this history here.

9 Design Principles
There are many principles of design and several ways to discuss each one. We will focus on nine key principles of design. Click on each principle to learn more about it.
Proportion is the comparative relationship between the size of components or parts of components.
Contrast is the variations between different elements or subjects.
Proximity refers to the arrangement of elements in close relation to each other to convey a sense of unity and connection.
Repetition means reusing elements, such as colours, patterns, fonts in a consistent manner.
Variety introduces diversity and contrast amongst elements to add visual interest and engagement.
Balance involves ensuring stability and evenness in size, colour, texture, and number of objects.
Negative space uses emptiness to draw attention to existing content by defining and separating sections.
Harmony incorporates balance, alignment, unity, and relationship to ensure that design elements blend together seamlessly.
Hierarchy involves arranging the elements of your composition based on their level of importance.
