What we've done
At this stage, you should have:
Chosen a photograph by Jerry Ulesmann
Annotated the photo by labelling the 'Make' & 'Method' elements (from AIMMEE), in detail, as if I cannot see them.
This lesson
We are going to expand each of those dot points to explain a possible intention by reflecting on these 'Make' and 'Method' elements.
We will use the TEEAC paragraph structure to help us expand on our main points.
Applying TEEAC to AIMMEE
By combining our understanding of 'AIMME' which helps us created good photos and 'TEEAC' which helps us write good paragraphs, we can write good paragraphs about good photos which will make us successful communicators both visually and in written responses.
Topic = Audience & Intention
Jerry Ulesmann created surreal images. He focussed on dreamlike images by blending elements from multiple photos with his compositions often featuring fantastical landscapes, floating objects, and unexpected juxtapositions, which means to place opposites next to each other. An intention in the image above could have been to make the audience consider life and death or the passage of time.
Note: You have not been asked to consider audience for this particular task so you are not required to mention this. Tertiary students or students aiming for a higher grade can do additional research to add this.
Explanation & Evidence = Make/ Method / Edit
The main subject in this photo is also an object and that is a boat shown exposed over a set of hands that are cupped almost like a bowl. The background behind the hands is completely minimalistic as it is plain black and draws the viewers eyes towards the more interesting parts of the photograph, such as the boat. The background behind the boat includes the ocean it is floating on which has been exposed with dark shadows so that it contrasts with the brighter sky background. The sky is cloudy with light shadows creating texture, which contrasts with the highlights of the ocean that also create texture. A key action is the boat floating. It also has a rope attached so it will not be lost to the ocean. The image is balanced, looking similar on each side, which is restful for viewers eyes and a higher angle has been used so that viewers can also see the inside of the boat, which is empty.

Analysis = Reasons for Make/ Method / Edit
Jerry Uelsmann was known for using symbols within his photographs. He said that he uses boats to represent spiritual ideas, such as life and death. By placing this over the hands shaped like a bowl and almost filling them up with the ocean and the boats, the hands seem full, like if this does represent some kind of journey to an afterlife, it seems like a positive one. By having the boat anchored on still water rather than floating away or capsized by rough waves, this matches that idea and makes the image feel calm. Jerry also described that lots of cultures and religions talk about travelling towards light when it comes to people passing away, so that is why the image is darker around the outside and light towards the middle. By including minimalist elements, like the plain background and not too many objects, the viewer always has their eye guided through the simple image which adds to the sense of calm and peace that it evokes. By using the high angle to show the empty boat, it is up to the viewer to consider who could be in it or how they relate it to their life which is possibly more interesting than if there was a person there.
Conclusion = Evaluate
Through the use of subject matter and camera choices, this photo represents the idea of passing on to another life but creates feelings of calm and peace around this journey. The photo suits the surrealist genre as it is dreamlike and connects to deeper feelings. It is aesthetically good as it is simple and the viewer's eye is guided around the image. It could possibly be improved by including more juxtaposition around the feelings it creates as many people are scared or confused about the idea of passing away or having those close to us pass and this image does not represent that.
