Using voice notes in a Google Site enhances multi-modal communication. Multi-modal communication is conveying information through various sensory channels, such as text, images, and audio.
By incorporating voice notes, you engage your audience through audio making your site accessible and engaging. By using voice notes, you may expand on ideas or explore them in a different way than if you wrote about them. It can help convey a more personal message or extend ideas beyond written dot points which enhances the experience of your audience.
To create voice notes in our process journal or portfolio, we can use a Chrome extension called Mote. A Chrome extension is a small software program that can be added to the Google Chrome web browser which allows you to use additional features and custom options.
You can access Mote here.
Mote should now open and display your student number in the top right corner of the window. You will need to select that you are a 'Student' from the list of options (student / educator / personal / professional).
It will then ask to confirm if you are under 18 or 18+. Select the appropriate answer.
If under 18, tick the box that pops up that says 'I have permission from a teacher or a supervising adult to use Mote.'
Select 'Get Started Free.'
Select 'Install the Extension.'
You will now be on the Google extension page.
Select the blue rectangle that sys 'Add to Chrome.' It should be in the top, right corner.
You will then see a pop-up in the centre of your screen that says 'Add 'Mote: voice notes & feedback'?' Select the white box on the left that says 'Add extension.'
You can now use Mote by selecting the puzzle piece in the top right corner of your webpage when using Google Chrome.
Open your Google Site using Google Chrome as your browser.
Go to the Google Site Page where you would like to add a voice note.
Click the puzzle piece in the top right corner to see your extensions and select the Mote logo.
If this is your first time using Mote, it may open up a second tab and ask you to log in using your student ID. Do this and then return to your first tab. Start by clicking the Mote logo again.
There may be a pop-up window on the top left of your screen that says 'Mote wants to use your microphone.' Select 'Allow.'
Once all that is complete, if you click the Mote logo under the extensions puzzle piece, a small window will pop up where the Mote logo is a little larger. It says at the bottom of this window, 'Click to Record.'
Click to record a voice note.
Speak in a clear voice. The Mote extension should have purple lines that go up and down to show it understands the changes of volume in your voice.
Click the purple tick when you have completed recording.
Your voice note URL has been automatically copied.
Double click on your Google site page and select 'embed' on the left side of the wheel that pops up. A window will pop-up in the centre of the screen that says 'Embed from the web.' Below it, it will say 'By URL' and 'Embed Code.' It will be automatically set to 'By URL.'
Click Ctrl+V or Right Click>Paste your code in to the text bar.
The pop up will then show you the choice between 'Whole Page' and 'Preview.' Select 'Whole Page.' Click Insert.
Your voice note should now appear in your Google Site. You can now adjust the size and move it around as if it is an image. When your site is published or by using 'Preview' in the top right corner, you will be able to listen to voice notes when you click the purple play button.
Additional Note: Viewing Past Recordings
If you click on the Mote extension and the pop up comes up for you to start your recording, you can instead click the three horizontal lines at the top left of the pop up and select 'Activity.' Here, you can view your recorded notes, give them titles, edit, delete or share them again.
