You can find 'Quality of Response,' under Resources / Write Good Resources if you want to use it in future or other classes
This should almost tell you everything you need to know about your work, even before I mark it
D = Identify
Make: The main subject is a man wearing a headscarf and crouching in dirt. The background is filled with debris.
Intention: Steve McCury was showing us how different people live and how reading is important to different people.
Using AI poorly (e.g. writing the essay question on ChatGPT and copying across its answer)
C = Describe / Explain
Describing is where you use the terms we have learned in class to provide detail on an image and begin to connect your description to intentions in the image.
Example:
In the 'Kuwait' images, the main subject is a man wearing Middle Eastern attire, including a robe and a headscarf. He is crouching in an of dirt, surrounded by debris and mess, which surround him, creating leading lines and balance that draw viewers attention to what he is doing. Upturned cars frame the image and provide balance, with similar visual weight on each side of the photo and also emphasise the sense of chaos that he finds himself in. The high angle shot provides depth so that the viewer can see the mess spreading all the way in to the background, showing that destruction has been widespread. A bright, cloudless sky fills the image with natural light, hinting that there is not weaponry or natural risks to fear when the photo was taken. Hence, the man crouches and flips through a book which is part of the debris on the ground, investigating the items that have been left behind. In this photo, McCurry shows the western world challenges being faced in other areas of the globe, with this one taken in 1991 when Kuwait was in the midst of being invaded by Iraq during the Gulf war. An intention of this photo would likely be to share the widespread destruction that was occurring in a time where images could not be shared on social media and were captured by photographers.
B = Analyse
Analysis is connecting your ideas. When you have noticed something or found a quote about the context of the image, try to learn more about that context.
You can use chatGPT for things like this to begin getting ideas but then you should check additional sources to ensure the information is accurate. Questions you could ask chatGPT:
What was happening in Kuwait in 1991?
Research points:
Gulf War
Desert Storm Operation
Iraq invasion / Kuwait Liberation
What type of photographer was Steve McCurry?
Research points:
Photojournalism
Documentary Photography
Human condition / Cultural Diversity / Social Issues
Afghan Girl
You could ask more questions about the context of other images too.
These are all jumping off points for further research.
They are also opportunities to use quotes or in-text references as evidence for your research, which your teacher will look for in A & B level responses.
A = Critical Analysis / Evaluate
Critical response involves evaluating.
Tertiary, you could consider the affect of the series on audiences and society:
Were these images an accurate depiction of the cultures they represented?
Were the images gathered and presented in ethical ways?
What experience and affiliations does McCurry have with the cultures represented? Did he tell their stories in a respectful way?
How did McCurry value the people in the images and compensate the work that he profited off?
How has the idea of reading been depicted and does that create enough value for society to make any of the ethical challenges justifiable?
Accredited, you should consider links to other parts of classes and practical ideas:
Is this narrative series place-based or thematic? Why?
Do you like the series? Why or why not?
What would you change about the series, if anything?
What types of images does it inspire you to create?
What work or what didn’t in the way it was created?
How did it reflect something happening in society at the time?
