Week 5
August 20-22
Mode: This will be an in-class assessment task.
Throughout the term, you have been learning about different types of narrative photography and how they use elements of the AIMMEE framework to create meaning and tell a story. These elements show how photographers can display an intention for an audience, through their choices in front of and behind the camera. You will now use your understanding of AIMMEE and narrative photography to evaluate narrative images from another photographer. This will be completed as an in class written response.
The week leading up to the in-class task, you can do research and collect notes.
You may bring a single-sided A4 page (font size 12) in with you to the in-class session
You will get a one hour period to type your analysis, submitting at the end of the lesson
You must bring a student Chromebook and charger to the session
You should aim to reflect on two images
You will write a formal essay that answers the following question,
What is Steve McCurry’s intention in the On Reading photo series, and how do visual techniques and cultural context help communicate this to the audience?
To develop your response, you should analyse two photographs from the four listed below and consider the following:
How the photographs were made (e.g. subject, colour, lighting, composition, setting).
The methods McCurry used to capture and present these images (e.g. camera techniques, candid approach, framing, use of light).
What McCurry might have intended to communicate through this series. Consider how his intention was shaped by the context of time, place and culture.
The emotional or intellectual effect the images may have on viewers. What thoughts or feelings might the photos evoke about reading? How might one image affect viewers differently than the other?
Whether you believe the series has been successful in conveying its message or purpose.
Use evidence from the images to support your argument.
You will write structured paragraphs that answer the following question,
What is Liam Wong’s intention in the TO:KY:OO photo series, and how have 'Make' and 'Method' been used to shape the audience’s understanding and emotional response?
To answer this, you should consider:
What is shown in the photos? (Think about the subject, colours, lighting, composition, and setting.)
How do you think the photos were taken? (Think about things like the angle, camera settings, lighting, and how Wong found the location.)
What do you think Liam Wong was trying to say or show in this series? How might this be influenced by Tokyo, his love of games, or the style of cyberpunk?
How do the photos make the audience feel or think? (For example: feelings of isolation, wonder, mystery, or thoughts about city life and technology.)
Do you think the photo series is successful in sharing its message or purpose? Why or why not?
You will write simple, clear answers to help explain this question:
What is Liam Wong trying to say in his TO:KY:OO photo series, and how do his photo choices help the audience understand or feel something?
To help you answer this, you will:
Look closely at two photos from Liam Wong’s TO:KY:OO series.
Describe what you see in each photo (e.g. lights, colours, people, setting).
Describe how the photo was made (e.g. angle, lighting, composition, colour).
Say how the two photos are similar or different.
Think about what the audience might feel when they see them.
Share your own ideas about what the artist is trying to say or show.
Reflect on what you learned about photography.
You will not need to write long paragraphs. You will answer each part in small sections to help you explain your thinking step-by-step.
Modified Students may bring all of their class notes to the in-class session.
critically analyse narratives within photographic works
critically analyse how a narrative is produced in photography
To understand how you will be marked, see the rubric provided on Google classroom.
