Texture refers to how elements feels when touched (real) and can be represented in designs and 2 dimensional spaces (implied)
Texture influences emotional responses in viewers, from pleasure to discomfort or a sense of familiarity.
Graphic designers use textures on posters, signs, and products to achieve specific styles. Textures can attract or repel people, depending on their pleasantness, playing a significant role in the overall appeal of the design.
Below are some examples of textures inspired by the environment. Some are image textures (organic and more random). Some are pattern textures (more uniform and repeated textures). Your project is to choose a texture and then apply it as an overlay to a carton. Instructions are below.
Choose one of the six image textures.
Right-click on the texture you want to use and select "Save Image As" or "Download." Save it to your 'Design & Graphics folder in your Documents.
Launch Adobe Photoshop on your computer.
Go to "File" > "Open" and select the carton image (PNG with a transparent background) you want to apply the texture to.
Open the texture image you want to apply in Photoshop.
Ctrl+A to select all of the texture image. Ctrl+C to copy it.
Navigate to the carton image and Ctrl+V to paste your texture. It will appear as a second layer in the layer panel (bottom, right of screen).
Use Ctrl+T to 'transform' your texture image by clicking and dragging the white boxes that appear on the corners until it covers the carton image.
In the Layers panel, experiment with different blend modes (e.g., Overlay or Color Burn) to achieve the desired effect. You can find the blend mode dropdown at the top of the Layers panel.
Adjust the opacity if needed to control the intensity of the texture.
Use the 'Alt' key on your keyboard and hover your mouse cursor over the texture layer until a little white square and down arrow appear. Then click.
This will make the layer apply only to the cartons and the background should remain transparent.
Once satisfied with the result, go to "File" > "Save As" to save your edited image.
Choose a file format (e.g., PNG) and a location to save the file.
That's it! You've successfully selected a texture, applied it to cartons in Adobe Photoshop, and saved your edited image.
