A print test in photography involves printing a sample image to check the quality, colour accuracy, and details before producing the final version. It helps photographers ensure the final print meets their expectations in terms of appearance and technical accuracy.
Print tests are important for sustainability and cost efficiency, as they help avoid waste from errors in large print runs and ensure minimal use of resources. By catching potential issues early, photographers can reduce the environmental impact and save money by producing only the necessary number of final prints.
Download the Print Test Template provided here.Â
The template will suit the requirements of our printer and allow us to print on as little paper as possible while running a test.
Choose whether you are testing your image details or editing choices.
For image details: Use the marquee tool to copy different detailed elements of your image and place them along the dotted lines of the template. This will allow you to get an understanding of what different parts of your image will look like before committing to the final print.
For editing choices: Try editing your image a few different ways (e.g. brighter, darker, colder colour, warmer colour). Place the different versions of your image along the dotted lines of the template. This will allow you to view what your edited image will look like when printed and to choose the best option for this.
If I was printing this Jurrasic Park Movie poster, this print test would allow me to view how different parts of the image will look when printed. I have tried to include all main colours, textures and light levels.
Export your image as a PDF that retains the same dimensions as provided in the template.
Send your PDF to john.parson@ed.act.edu.au AND bishworam.adhikari@ed.act.edu.au titled 'Print Test (Your name)'
