In Week 7, I posted 'Quality of Response,' to show you how to aim for certain grades
You can also find this under Resources / Write Good Resources if you want to use it in future or other classes
This should almost tell you everything you need to know about your work, even before I mark it
D = Identify
Make: The main subject is a white woman's face shot from a high angle with glass beads placed on her face where tears might be
Intention: Glass tears was created by Man Ray to get back at his ex girlfriend.
Using AI poorly (e.g. writing the essay question on ChatGPT and copying across its answer)
C = Describe / Explain
Describing is where you use the terms we have learned in class to provide detail on an image and begin to connect your description to intentions in the image.
Example:
Glass Tears was a way that Man Ray was making fun of his ex girlfriend. The subject is a woman’s face with glass beads placed on it. The photo was taken close up, with no background and from a high angle that mimicked the close up’s shown in cinema in the 1920s. The butterfly lighting also adds to this effect as the angle and lighting was chosen to emphasise the drama and intensity of women’s feelings, drawing similarities between them and the dramatic way that leading ladies would act in films. Glass is fragile and was chosen to represent this fragility, making fun of the act of crying and being ready to break down at any moment.
'Noire et Blanche' means ‘Black and White’ but it is ironic because it shows white and black.
B = Analyse
Analysis is connecting your ideas. When you have noticed something or found a quote about the context of the image, try to learn more about that context.
You can use chatGPT for things like this to begin getting ideas but then you should check additional sources to ensure the information is accurate. Questions you could ask chatGPT:
What racial challenges were faced between black and white people in France, Europe and the US in the 1920s-30s?
Research point:
Jim Crow Laws / segregation
What was the role of women and feminism in France, Europe and the US in the 1920s-30s?
Research points:
Suffrage movement
Right to vote
Birth control
19th amendment 1920 right to vote
How were women represented in French cinema in 1930s?
Research points:
Traditional gender roles / supporting male stories
Glamour and sexuality
“Some” strong independent characters
These are all jumping off points for further research.
They are also opportunities to use quotes or in-text references as evidence for your research, which your teacher will look for in A & B level responses.
A = Critical Analysis / Evaluate
Critical response involves evaluating.
Tertiary, you could consider:
Is this image important today?
What has changed about the ideas shown in the image between then and now?
Should we study Man Ray or his he cancelled?
Was it ok that his ex girlfriend that he made fun of in glass tears was also his assistant that he then he fired her after they broke up?
Accredited, you could consider those things too or you could consider:
Do you like the image? Why or why not?
How would you make the image differently?
What types of images does it inspire you to create?
What work or what didn’t in the way it was created?
How did it reflect something happening in society at the time?
How did it reflect ideas of Dadism?
