Enclosing Space
Shapes serve as a visual language for artists and designers to communicate form, structure, and relationships within a composition. Shapes are created when the front and end of a line meet, creating an enclosed space. They are two-dimensional (flat) and should have a length and a width. By adding shadows and highlights to a shape, you can make them look three-dimensional.
Shapes can be inspired by the organic curves of nature or the precision of geometric design to create a specific aesthetic style and to express different feelings and ideas. This conveys important identity, structure, and messaging in graphic design compositions, which enhances their overall impact and effectiveness.
Metric’ means “to measure” so a geometric shape is deliberately measured.
We talk about geometric shapes in maths as they are precise and can have known names (e.g. circle, square, polygon, rectangular).
Organic means natural. It is used in advertising to get you to see the health benefits of things that are not overly processed.
In Art, organic shapes are natural. They do not have names or specific measurements and angles
Organic shapes are ‘free form’ and can be created by hand.
