Sometimes it is hard to know where to start when searching for inspiration for a creative idea. Some of the following areas may help to consider how to begin inspiration research.
Do you already have an idea for your series (e.g. people in their bedrooms or exploring mental health?). Instead of writing the inspiration prompt you have been given on Google, you could search for key terms. E.g:
Bedroom photography series
Portraits of people in their bedrooms
Identity and place photography series
Location and identity series
Dream photography series
Narrative photography series
Perhaps there is an artist or photographer on Instagram that you already like the work of. Start there, what do you like about their work? To expand on this idea:
Consider what themes the image used and search for related hashtags on Instagram (e.g. #portraitphotography, #petphotography)
Check which hashtags are used under images that you like and then use that hashtag to search for other similar images
When you have found a profile for a photographer you like, check who they follow and who follows them for more inspiration
There are already some places you could go to find examples of interesting images without knowing what type you want to research yet. Examples of this include
National Gallery of Australia
National Portrait Gallery of Australia
Time's top 100 photos for each year
Flickr (for amateur photography)
Pinterest (if you use this, you will need to find the original source for the photo so that you can reference it correctly).
Maybe you don't yet know how you will interpret your theme but there is a genre or style of photography that you know you would like to explore. Search for this types of photos to help give you ideas. Examples could include:
Musician albums covers
Portrait Photography
Street Photography
Photojournalism
Surrealist Photography
Nature Photography
Fashion Photography
Still Life Photography
Sport Photography
IMDB (2024) 'Dune Part Two' URL
You might be inspired for your photo project by considering other media that you have engaged with which could be related to the topic. This could include:
Songs or Albums
Album Covers
Music Videos
Movies
TV Shows
Social Media / YouTube / TikTok
Gaming
Physical Games
Visual Art
Locations (such as places you have been or places you have access to)
For Your Portfolio
1. Go to canva.com.
2. On the top right, select 'Create a Design' (purple tab) and click 'whiteboard' from the drop down menu.
3. You now have a page that will be as big or as small as you make it, depending on how many things you put in.
4. Start searching for your images on Google. Once you have opened an image, you can click and drag it in to your mood board.
5. As you are collecting images, please also create a Google Doc in your 'Mood Board' folder and collect the links to where your images are from. You will need to APA reference them. You should use at least ten images in your mood board.
6. Click 'Text' on the left side to add titles and / or descriptions for the images you are including.
7. You should create an APA reference list for your images. You can do this below your mood board on Canva or on a seperate Google doc.
8. When you are done, go to 'share' on the top right of the screen and download your Mood Board as a PNG. You should then put this in your portfolio as a part of your research and inspiration.
