What is a vector image?
A vector image is a type of graphic that is created using mathematical formulas, allowing it to be scaled to any size without losing quality.
Unlike raster images (like JPEGS), which are made up of individual pixels, vector images are composed of paths and curves defined by points and lines..
What about paths?
A path is a series of connected points that describe a shape or line. In Adobe Illustrator, a path or line is created using the Pen tool or other drawing tools. It consists of anchor points connected by straight or curved segments, allowing users to define precise shapes and lines. Paths in Illustrator can be edited by adjusting anchor points, changing segment types, or applying various effects to achieve desired designs.

Download this Adobe Illustrator file and then open it with Adobe Illustrator. Use the pen tool to trace over the lines shown.
Making a Vector image based on a photo
A good way to get to know how to use the pen tool to create shapes and graphics that you can use is to download a photo from online and then trace over it to create your own vector graphic version of the photo. You can see this technique in the video below. Start at the 4:00 minute mark.
Activity: Create a Vector House
We are going to practise using paths to draw over a photograph by researching house styles. In Adobe Illustrator, you will draw/replicate a house from the style you have selected. Find a high quality image of a house from one of the following styles to trace in Adobe Illustrator:
Tata Somba Architecture
Rumah Gadang Architecture
Georgian Architecture
Bay-and-Gable Architecture
Gothic Revival Architecture
Queenslander Architecture
Storybook House Architecture
Victorian Architecture
Art Deco Architecture
International Style Architecture
Mid-century Modern Architecture
Postmodern Architecture
When you are finished, you should have created something that looks similar to this:
