Goofy Comedy
Topic
The genre of this trailer is goofy comedy. A goofy comedy film is a light-hearted and humorous movie genre that aims to entertain audiences through absurd situations, slapstick humour, and exaggerated characters (Masterclass, 2021). Goofy comedies often rely more on creating laughter than they do on being realistic.
Explanation & Evidence
The trailer presents two main characters, Bella and Edward and they act goofy as Edward makes mistakes in developing a friendship with Bella, being the new kid at school. Actions in the trailer include witty dialogue, such as the pun, "Love at first bite"), and also goofy physical actions, such as Bella having things thrown at and exaggerated facial expressions, like Edward covering his nose when she smells bad. The colours are bright and high contrast, the font is chalkboard inspired and the trailer uses playful, upbeat music and funny sound effects, including fart noises and record scratches.
Analysis
These elements help show that the trailer is for a comedy because silly situations and exaggerated facial expressions are an important part of comedy (Barnes, 2023). Schools are used as settings for comedies as funny things and unbelievable situations can happen there when young people are learning to socially interact. This is reinforced by the chalkboard font, which also doesn't seem too serious as a bolder font might. The bright scenes symbolises keeping things light and light-hearted. These elements are used in other films of this genre, for example '10 Things I Hate About You (1999)' which uses exaggerated facial expressions and 'Mean Girls (2004)' which uses bright colours. It is important for audiences to identify the genre of a film from the trailer or film poster because then they can be drawn towards films that they will like and understand what type of film the trailer and advertisements are communicating.
Conclusion
Because of all these elements, school settings, silly situations, exaggerated expressions, bright colours and funny sound effects, it is clear to audiences that this trailer represents a film which is a goofy comedy and this will help them to know that they can expect laughter and light-heartedness which will encourage them to view the movie if that is something they like.
Audience
Age
Primarily between 15 and 30 years old. The older end of this range is likely to have grown up during the height of the Twilight franchise's popularity and have fond memories of it. They are old enough to appreciate nostalgic references. The younger end of this range is likely to appreciate comedy and more specifically the goofy and slapstick elements. This style of comedy relies more on visuals than language or ideas and can be accessible to younger people and those with less attention span.
Media Consumption
Nostalgia-Driven Consumers: This type of film will appeal to people who enjoy revisiting media from their past (like watching old episodes of The Simpsons over and over). They seek out media with references to popular movies or TV shows from their childhood or teenage years.
Comedy Lovers: Audiences who enjoy light-hearted, slapstick and satirical humour are likely to enjoy this film.
Spooky Spookers: While it has been reframed as a goofy comedy, this film still makes references to original Twilight spooky content, such as vampires and the supernatural (e.g. "love at first bite"). This will attract media users who are interested in ghosts, supernatural and horror related content.
Family structure / values
Due to the ages of this demographic, there would be a representation of young people who have less freedoms and are reliant on parents to attend films and there could be young parents who are just starting their family. This means that the film must be attractive to teens and adults and be something that can be enjoyed in a family environment. It is likely, these demographics will appreciate content they can enjoy as a bonding experience with the family.
Persuasion
Pathos is an emotional appeal that aims to connect with the audience's emotions and values. It would be the most effective persuasive technique for persuading the identified audience to view this genre of film for three key reasons:
Nostalgia and Familiarity: Pathos can tap into the audience's fond memories of the popularity of Twilight during their younger years. References to iconic scenes and characters will evoke emotions to past experiences. This emotional connection encourages them to watch cherished moments with a fresh, humorous twist.
Family Bonding and Shared Memories: Pathos can emphasise the importance of family bonding and shared experiences. By depicting scenes in the parody that mirror family values or are moments the family can enjoy together, this will create an emotional motivator to view the film.
Connection Through Humour: Comedy often relies on emotional connection to trigger laughter. The film poster should also emphasise this emotion to connect to the laughter and escape from mundane life that the film was created to bring.
Mood Board
Inspiration shown in my mood board:
Funny but about love / relationship (romcom vibes)
Still shows vampire / supernatural element (e.g. fangs)
Final design will include "love at first bite" to convey this
Font includes fangs in Renfield - I like this idea
Pinks and reds to mix romance and horror elements
Comedic close ups of actors emotive faces (should be more silly than close ups in OG Twilight posters)
Chalkboard font to link to trailer / high school vibes?
Colours need to be lighter and happier feeling than OG Twilight posters
Poster Layout
Socials Layouts
Design Principles
Engaging the audience through design principles.
Nostalgia & Hierarchy
The original characters have been emphasised through the use of hierarchy. They take up the most visual space in the poster and will draw the attention of people who appreciate Twilight already. The next most obvious element is the heading as this is at the top of the page and white so that it contrasts against the backdrop.
Comedy & Contrast
Humour and comedy are frequently created by contrasting unlike ideas to surprise and shock audiences (Corley, 2022). This is why comedy and tragedy sometimes go together. For this reason, using visual contrast suited this idea in the movie poster. Thematically darker elements, such as the vampires and their lust for blood will be represented through reds and sharp shapes while light-hearted elements such as comedy and the main characters romance will be represented through goofy expressions and pink colours. Pinks and reds are also used frequently in romance posters so the audience will know what genre of movie this is. The good expressions will show them it is a comedy. These elements as well as the colours will also persuade the audience through pathos; they may be emotionally invested in character facial expressions and finding out if the relationship lasts, as well as seeing the comedy elements through the contrasting of colours and ideas.
Spooky Language & Symbols
To engage audiences who have an interest in supernatural / horror, there will be several elements that indicate these elements will be present in the film. To start with, the 'i's' in the 'Twilight' title will be longer than the rest of the font and appear as fang shaped. This is inspired by the Renfeild font (IMDB, 2023, Renfield). The 'Twilight' title font will still be chalkboard in style so that it also portrays the high school comedy genre. Other spooky elements include the phrase, "love at first bite" as this suggests that someone could be bitten in the film and there are vampire elements. This will also be emphasised through the subjects having particularly red lips. Finally, there will be a blood element of some kind. This could be blood on the word 'bite' or a drippy font but will be developed during the creation process.
