Gastrocnemius muscle

The gastrocnemius muscle is a muscle in the superficial layer of the posterior compartment of the leg. It has two heads, medial and lateral, that insert into the calcaneal tendon. 

Action: Flex knee, plantar flex ankle

Nerve: Tibial nerve

Origin: Medial and lateral condyles of femur

Insertion: Calcaneus
