Commonly called the “Adams apple”, as the laryngeal prominence is typically larger in males than in females. The laryngeal prominence is the anterior attachment of the vocal ligaments (vocal cords). The larger laryngeal prominence in men is associated with longer vocal cords, and a longer cord will vibrate at a lower frequency, thus men typically have lower voices than women.
Adams apple reduction surgery (before and after photos below) is an outpatient suregery in which the cartilage of the Adam’s apple is shaved down to reduce the size and angularity of the Adam’s apple. It may be performed on men who are uncomfortable with the size of their Adam’s apple, and it is also one of the most common gender affirming surgeries.
