The orbicularis oculi is one of the muscles of facial expression, and so is innervated by CN VII (the facial n.). The action of the muscle is to close the eyelids.
The orbicularis oculi m. is divided into 2 parts, a thin palpebral part that sits on the eyelids, and a thicker orbital part that surrounds the eyelids. The palpebral part produces a more gentle closure of the eyelids, as in blinking or sleeping. The orbital part more forcefully closes the eyes.
