Occipital bone

Unpaired, the occipital bone forms the most inferior part of the cranial cavity.  It contains the foramen magnum, which connects the cranial cavity with the vertebral canal.  It also contains the hypoglossal canal, for passage of the hypoglossal n. (CN XII).
