The mandibular n. (CN V3) is the largest of the 3 paired branches of the trigeminal n. (CN V). The mandibular n. leaves the cranial cavity through the foramen ovale and provides sensory innervation to the lower jaw (skin, teeth, anterior 2/3 of tongue), and motor innervation to the 4 main muscles of mastication (temporalis m., masseter m., medial pterygoid m., lateral pterygoid m.).
The inferior alveolar n. is a sensory branch of the mandibular n. that provides sensory input from the lower teeth and the skin of the jaw. Dentists perform an inferior alveolar nerve block when they need to work on teeth in the lower jaw
