The ophthalmic n. is the first of the three major branches of the trigeminal n., and is also referred to as V1. The ophthalmic n. is purely sensory, and its major branches are the nasociliary n., the lacrimal n., and the frontal n. Although both sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons ride along with branches of the opththalmic n. (in both the short and long ciliary nn.), those autonomic neurons do not originate in the nucleus of CN V.
