The ciliary m. is a ring of smooth muscle, part of the ciliary body of the eye. When the muscle contracts it reduces the tension in the ciliary processes that hold the lens in place, and allows the lens to assume a more spherical shape, which allows the lens to focus on objects closer to the eye. This rounding of the lens is part of the accommodation reflex, as occurs when reading or otherwise focusing on near objects.
Innervation to the ciliary muscle is parasympathetic, with motor input routing through the ciliary ganglion. Post-ganglionic fibers travelling via short ciliary nerves..
